On 16 August 1972, Malaysia and Indonesia took a historic step together with the introduction of the New Malay Language Romanised Spelling System (Sistem Ejaan Rumi Baharu). More than a spelling reform, it marked a new chapter in strengthening Bahasa Melayu as a modern language for education, administration, literature, and national unity.
Under the leadership of Tun Abdul Razak, the new spelling system simplified the written language, making it more consistent and accessible for generations to come. A quiet reform on paper, yet one that transformed how millions would read, write, and connect through a shared national language. Some milestones are built with bricks. Others are written, one word at a time.
